This tour combines the best of modern art and Helsinki’s political history. The Ateneum Art Museum is Finland’s most renowned art museum. The collection of the museum spans from, for example, 18th-century romanticism to 19th- and 20th-century modernism. First, we will have an introduction to the exhibition Crossing Borders that features works by female artists who studied and worked in Germany in the 19th century. At that time, women had to choose between a career or a family, and they did not yet have the right to vote. The artists featured in Crossing Borders paved the way for the next generation of artists. After the introduction, visitors will have a chance to familiarise themselves with the exhibitions the Ateneum has to offer. Following the museum visit, Professor Teivo Teivainen and Postdoctoral Researcher Kati Katajisto will give a tour of Helsinki, which will introduce milestones in Finnish history and the city as a stage for world politics.
