We are pleased to announce that the application deadline for the 13th conference within the Genealogies of Memory ‘Pandemic, Famines and Industrial Disasters of the 20th and 21st Centuries’ has been extended! The new application deadline is 16 June 2023. The conference will take place in Warsaw on 22–24 November 2023, in a hybrid format with possible online participation.
This year conference will be an attempt to draw attention to the discourses of memory and non-remembrance of large-scale natural and human-induced disasters in 20th-century Europe. Scholars working at the intersection of social and cultural history, memory studies, political studies, environmental studies, social history of medicine, anthropology and adjacent fields are going to discuss on how both individuals and societies cope with the memory of traumatic and large-scale events (such as wars, famines, pandemics, natural and industrial disasters), as well as how the public narratives, behaviours and contemporary spaces therefore change.
To what extent is/has the memory of these population-threatening phenomena been influenced by the political and social transformations of the 20th century in East-Central Europe? And how does this region differ from Western European countries? This are also one of the important questions the participants of the Conference will try to answer.
