We are deeply sorry to inform about the passing of Prof. Paweł Śpiewak, Polish esteemed historian, sociologist, and former director of the Jewish Historical Institute.
Paweł Śpiewak was an outstanding sociologist and historian. He received his Ph.D and habilitation in humanities at the University of Warsaw. From 2011 to 2020, he served as Director of the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw. He was also a member of the Community College at the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
Paweł Śpiewak was a supporter and defender of Polish democracy, an esteemed scholar in the field of the sociology of transformation and a curator of the heritage of Polish Jews. For his lifetime achievements he received the Father Józef Tischer Award in the field of "religious and philosophical literature" in 2013.
Together with the ENRS Paweł Śpiewak created the programme of the 10th conference of the series Genealogies of Memory “The Holocaust between Global and Local Perspectives” in 2020.
