From 1 April 2023, ENRS takes part in the collaborative research project ‘Borders as central factor shaping perception of European Societies (B-SHAPES)’, leaded by the Centre of Border Region Studies at SDU.
B-SHAPES seeks to explore the role of the borders in shaping the perception of Europe and European societies in the 21st century, as well as the cross-border narratives on what unites Europe. Aimed at revealing the challenges of re-borderings in Europe, three empiric working packages will also scrutinize the impact of the migration crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, Brexit and growing Euroscepticism in border regions to the shape of the borders itself, national minorities and border landscapes.
The results of the project will open for a reconfiguration of heritage policies, replacing national approaches with cross-border European approaches to heritage, culture and belongings. These will empower citizens, but also economic sectors to contribute to the creation of more inclusive visions of culture and values, increasing the quality of life not only in border regions.
B-SHAPES is granted DKK 19.7 million from the European Commission, as part of the Horizon Europe-programme and DKK 2.5 million from UK Research and Innovation. The project is carried out in collaboration with 13 partners.
In addition to SDU, the project partners include Brunel University London, Halmstad University, University of Oulu, University of Wroclaw, University of Strasbourg, ELTE University in Budapest, Technical University of Liberec in the Czech Republic, EURAC Research and several associations and cultural institutions, including the Bulgarian Museum of National History, an artists’ collective in South Tyrol, Italy, and the Association of European Border Regions.
